Verified October 5, 2026
Rocky Point is a practical beach getaway for many Arizona families, but there is no single statewide fall-break week. District calendars overlap from late September through October, so the correct travel dates depend on the school your child attends.
Use the official dates below as a starting point, then check your child's school calendar before booking. Charter, private and individual school calendars may differ from their surrounding district.

Choose the trip window that matches your school
The staggered dates create several possible Rocky Point travel windows rather than one universal rush. Queen Creek and Kyrene families have options beginning in late September. Gilbert, Mesa and Higley families begin their break October 5, while Higley continues later than the other districts listed.
If your schedule is flexible, compare lodging availability for weekdays and weekends. Do not assume that a district-wide break guarantees space on a particular tour, at a resort or in a restaurant. Confirm reservations directly and keep cancellation terms.

Plan the drive before departure
Most Arizona visitors drive through Lukeville and Sonoyta, then follow Mexico Federal Highway 8 to Puerto Peñasco. The current U.S. travel advisory says U.S. government employees may use Highway 8 between the Lukeville–Sonoyta port and Puerto Peñasco and may not use another route to the city. The restriction is for government employees, but it is important route context for all travelers. Review the current State Department advisory and our detailed Rocky Point driving guide.
Before leaving:
- Check AZ 511 for incidents, closures, roadwork and weather on the Arizona portion.
- Reconfirm the Lukeville port information on the official CBP page; do not rely on an old screenshot.
- Carry valid travel documents and review the FMM tourist-permit guide.
- Obtain valid Mexican liability insurance for the vehicle and keep the policy accessible.
- Plan the Mexico portion during daylight and avoid navigation-app detours from Highway 8.
Pick family activities with a backup plan
A fall-break itinerary can combine the beach with boat trips, the Malecón, tide-pool learning, wildlife outings and relaxed resort time. Start with the Rocky Point family guide and things to do. Check minimum ages, accessibility, operating days and weather policies directly with each provider.
For boat or water activities, leave room for rescheduling. Wind, sea conditions or Port Captain instructions can change departures. A canceled outing is a reason to use the backup plan, not to look for an operator ignoring a safety closure.
Use beach flags and tides correctly
October can still bring changing marine and storm conditions. A calm-looking shoreline does not override a posted flag, lifeguard instruction or local warning. Read the beach flags and ocean-safety guide, supervise children closely and keep them off exposed rocks when waves or wet surfaces make footing unsafe.
Tides in Puerto Peñasco change the usable beach area dramatically. Check tide timing for planning, but never treat a prediction as a safety guarantee. If thunder is audible, move to a substantial building or enclosed vehicle and wait for the storm to pass.

Reserve the essentials first
For a fall-break trip, reserve in this order:
- Confirm the exact school dates and adult work schedule.
- Choose lodging that fits your group and cancellation needs; compare areas in places to stay.
- Check passports or other accepted border documents, immigration needs and vehicle insurance.
- Reserve any must-do tour through its official booking channel.
- Save a weather-safe backup list and emergency contacts.
Our October 2026 guide can hold time-sensitive event and weekend updates. This fall-break page should remain focused on school dates and family trip planning to avoid competing with that broader October page.
