Arizona to the Sea of Cortez
Driving to Rocky Point, Mexico.
A practical border, route, insurance, and road-trip guide for reaching Puerto Peñasco through Lukeville and Sonoyta.
Recommended corridor
Hours and requirements can change. Verify with official agencies on your travel day.
Check current Lukeville wait time ↗The straightforward route
Stay on the main road from border to beach.
The Lukeville–Sonoyta crossing is the direct gateway for travelers driving from central Arizona to Rocky Point. After the border, Federal Highway 8 runs from Sonoyta to Puerto Peñasco. Plan the international portion during daylight and avoid unplanned side routes.
Reach Ajo, Arizona
From the Phoenix area, drivers commonly travel west toward Gila Bend and then south through Ajo. Fill the tank and take a break before continuing toward the border.
Continue to Lukeville
Follow the signed highway route through Why and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument to the Lukeville Port of Entry. Watch for wildlife and changing speed limits.
Cross into Sonoyta
After entering Mexico, continue carefully through Sonoyta. Obey local traffic signals and posted speeds, and stay on the main signed route toward Puerto Peñasco.
Follow Mexico Highway 8
Use Federal Highway 8 between Sonoyta and Puerto Peñasco. Current U.S. government guidance specifically identifies this as the permitted route for its employees traveling to Rocky Point.
When should you cross?
Build extra time into the border day.
There is no single guaranteed “fastest” hour. Traffic changes with weekends, events, school calendars, weather, staffing, and holidays. Use the live CBP information and avoid a schedule with no margin.
Morning or early afternoon
Crossing into Mexico
Earlier is safer on busy Sundays
Returning to Arizona
Expect changing traffic patterns
Holiday weekends
For a Sunday or holiday return, check the live border information before leaving Rocky Point—not after you reach the line. Carry water, keep enough fuel in the vehicle, and leave early enough to absorb a longer wait.
Fuel, food, and restrooms
Plan your stops before the border.
Facilities and operating hours can change. Ajo is the strongest place to complete your final vehicle, fuel, water, and restroom stop before approaching Lukeville.
Fuel, food, and restrooms
Gila Bend
A useful stop before turning south toward Ajo. Confirm current business hours when traveling early or late.
Best full-service stop before Lukeville
Ajo
Fill the tank, use the restroom, buy water, and check tires. Services become more limited south of Ajo.
Last small Arizona stop
Why
A practical final check for fuel or basic supplies before the Organ Pipe and Lukeville stretch.
Fuel and services after crossing
Sonoyta
Stay on the signed Highway 8 route. Obey signals and posted speed limits as you travel through town.
Refuel before the return trip
Puerto Peñasco
Do not begin the return drive with a nearly empty tank, especially when traffic or heat could extend travel time.
Before crossing
Documents to prepare.
Keep originals together in a secure, easy-to-reach place. Requirements may vary by traveler, vehicle ownership, and trip length.
Travel document
Carry a valid passport book or other document accepted for your land-border trip, such as a passport card when eligible. Every traveler, including children, needs appropriate documentation.
Driver’s license
Bring a valid license for each person who may drive. Keep the original readily available rather than relying only on a phone photo.
Registration
Carry current vehicle registration. If the vehicle is financed, rented, borrowed, or owned by a company, confirm whether written permission is required.
Mexican insurance
Purchase a separate Mexico auto policy before crossing. The U.S. Embassy states that U.S. insurance is not sufficient for driving in Mexico.
Immigration documents
Entry formalities can depend on nationality and length or purpose of stay. Follow instructions from Mexican immigration officials and verify requirements before departure.
Minor consent
When a child travels without both parents or legal guardians, carry documentation showing permission to travel and proof of the relationship when applicable.
Do not skip this
Buy Mexican auto insurance before you cross.
A separate Mexican liability policy is essential. Review coverage limits, collision, theft, roadside help, legal assistance, deductibles, and the claims phone number. Save both digital and printed proof of coverage.
The Sonora Free Zone simplifies vehicle-permit rules for this route, but it does not replace insurance or immigration requirements.

If your vehicle breaks down
Get safe, identify your location, then call for help.
Move out of traffic
If the vehicle can move safely, pull completely off the travel lane onto firm ground. Turn on hazard lights and make everyone visible.
Protect passengers
Keep passengers away from moving traffic. In extreme heat, prioritize shade and drinking water while you arrange assistance.
Identify your location
Use a highway marker, nearby landmark, map pin, or GPS coordinates. Save an offline map because mobile coverage may be limited.
Call the correct help
For an immediate emergency in Mexico, call 911. For roadside assistance, contact your Mexican insurer and try Ángeles Verdes at 078 or its mobile app.
Do not accept unsafe help
Use your insurer, official roadside service, police, or a verified tow provider. Do not leave documents or valuables unattended.
Document the situation
Photograph damage, the vehicle position, and any collision scene when it is safe. Contact the insurer before authorizing major towing or repairs.
Official Mexican tourist assistance
Ángeles Verdes
Mexico’s tourism ministry says 078 connects travelers with free tourist information, roadside coordination, and basic mechanical assistance when service coverage is available. The Ángeles Verdes mobile app is another way to request help.
