The weekend combines recovery programming with time to reconnect, relax and enjoy the beach. Confirm the complete meeting and speaker schedule directly through the organizer; do not rely on an old schedule or a social-media repost from a previous year.

  • Al-Anon speakers and participation
  • A sobriety countdown

Driving from Arizona for the Roundup

Most Arizona visitors reach Puerto Peñasco through Ajo and Lukeville, cross at Sonoyta and continue on Mexico Federal Highway 8.

The U.S. Department of State currently lists Sonora at Level 3: Reconsider Travel. Its Puerto Peñasco guidance permits U.S. government employees to travel between Lukeville–Sonoyta and Puerto Peñasco on Federal Highway 8 only. Private visitors should read the current advisory, remain on the recognized route and make their own travel decision.

Plan the Mexico portion during daylight, avoid unfamiliar shortcuts, share your itinerary and check official conditions. See our driving to Rocky Point guide.

Border hours and documents

CBP currently lists Lukeville passenger hours as 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Verify the live listing on the CBP Border Wait Times page before both directions of travel.

U.S. citizens traveling by land should carry a valid passport book or passport card. U.S. Embassy guidance says most visitors entering Mexico by land also need an entry permit, commonly called an FMM. Follow Mexican immigration officials’ instructions at the crossing.

U.S. auto insurance is not sufficient in Mexico; obtain a separate Mexican policy. Puerto Peñasco is inside the Sonora Free Zone, which the Embassy lists as exempt from the Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit requirement. Confirm the rules if your itinerary leaves the free zone.

  • Valid passport book or passport card
  • Driver’s license and current vehicle registration
  • Separate Mexican automobile insurance
  • Lodging confirmation and event information
  • Cash and a payment card
  • Copies of essential documents stored separately

October weather and what to pack

October is generally more comfortable than midsummer, but Puerto Peñasco remains a desert-and-sea destination. Daytime sun can feel strong, while evenings near the water may be cooler. Check our weather and tides guide shortly before traveling.

  • Event registration confirmation
  • Passport and travel documents
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Light evening layers
  • Personal medications in original labeled containers
  • Phone charger or backup battery

Respecting privacy and recovery spaces

Recovery events depend on trust. Follow the organizer’s rules for photography, recording and social media. Do not photograph or identify another attendee without clear permission. Keep meeting conversations confidential and respect whether a session is open or restricted.
